Big Savage Mountain
Guided Hike

This trail is one of the best in the region, and perhaps the best advanced dayhike in Maryland. It climbs over 1,250 vertical feet to the summit of Big Savage Mountain (second highest in the state). This is a challenging hike and takes about 4 hours round trip.

A Workout with a view!

You are guaranteed to build a sweat going up and guaranteed to be awed by the view at the top. This is an excellent trip for folks looking for a challenging hike that is similar to hiking in the big mountains of New England or the Smokies. The view from atop the rock cliffs at the top of the mountain stretches for miles and miles, and is an apt reward for your effort. We normally have a picnic at the top. Adventurous families with a gung-ho attitude have made it and it is a great family team building activity.

How often do you get to climb a mountain? In some cultures it is a right of passage and a sacred journey. Don't miss this opportunity for a beautiful hike that is done ...'because it's there'.

What you will do and see: The trail starts easy at 1,200 feet in eleveation, but then at the base of the Savage River Dam the climbing begins. This trail is well maintained and it goes up and up the mountain making several switchbacks. Trail passes through nice hardwood forest and the trial has some views through the woods towards the Savage River Reservoir and Backbone Mountain. Once the ridge top is reached the trail eases for approx 1 mile until we reach the summit and the overlook rocks at 2,675 elevation. There is some scrambling on the summit rocks as we traverse to the highpoint.
