A
Custom Hiking Trip for Groups of 6 or more. This is a great trip
for youth groups, womens groups, mens groups, scout troops, and
groups looking for a wilderness experience.
We
usually meet at 10:00 am. This is a one way hike so the first thing we do is set up a car
shuttle (takes about 20 minutes). This way your cars will be at
the end of the trail.
Middle
Fork Hiking Trips Run May through October
Advance Booking Required

Where: We meet at the Trail Head
on Dry Run Road (we'll give you easy to follow directions)
Only 20 minutes From Deep Creek Lake
Cost: Minimum Guide Fee: $200 + $10 per person
What You Will Do: The Middlefork of The Savage River Wild Lands
is a remote and serene protected wilderness area in the Savage State
Forest. If you are looking for a true back country tour this is it.The pristine valley stretches for about 7 miles with very
little sign (if any) of human disturbance. Hardwood trees of impressive
size live in the narrow roadless valley, and birds, wildlife and
plant communities thrive in amazing diversity. The trail is mostly
a downgrade. Once in the wildlands we follow old trails and rail
road grades down the valley. Passing through cool hemlock groves
that line the stream bank, the only sounds are of birdsong, the
rushing stream, and the wind in the treees. There are approx 9 stream
crossings so you may get damp or wet feet by the end of the day.
Trips go rain or shine, as few things can compare with a day spent
walking in the moist woods. Guides carry a tarp for a dry lunch
stop. We may move the hike to another trail if the river is too
high to make crossings.
Great school trip for 7th grade on
up.
The trail has a true backcountry character and we sometimes
have to scramble over logs or negotiate a way around a boggy area.
Walking and speaking quietly sometimes will lead to a chance bear sighting or other wildlife encounters. Your guide will explain natural features along the way and teach you
about basic wilderness travel skills such as, travelling in bear and
snake country, basic map and compass, how to avoid getting lost and
what to do if you do. We try to make the deep woods less intimidating
by educating our guests so they can consider planning an adventure
on their own.
What
to bring: Knapsack or small backpack if you have one, bag lunch, long pants or shorts if you don't mind looking out
for nettles or poison ivy, brimmed hat, bottle of water, sweatshirt
and windbreaker if a cool day, or rain gear if rainy. Insect repellent
for the gnats, skin so soft is excellent. Cameras, identification
books and binoculars are recommended. Bring a change of clothes and
shoes for after if rainy.
Registration: Release forms are
required and minor children must have a signed parental consent and
release form. Call 301-746-4083 for info.
